Worship at Santa Cruz Valley United Methodist Church
Where Everyone Belongs
CURRENT SERMON SERIES:
January 10th began the new sermon series, “Parables from the Back Side.” This series will consider six parables that Jesus told but from a different viewpoint. This series will be told through the eyes of a minor or unsympathetic character. By approaching these stories from a different view point we hope to find new meaning and clarify Jesus’ basic teachings. J. Ellsworth Kalas authors the book by the same name.
Jan 10: The Timid Soul, Matthew 25:14-30
Jan 17: Why God doesn’t like Religious People, Luke 18:9-14
Jan 24: Pardon My Insistence, Matthew 22:1-10
Jan 31: Parable of the Spoiled Brothers, Luke 15:11-32
Feb 7: Parable of the Workers Paid Unequally, Matthew 20:1-15
Feb 14: Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids, Matthew 25:1-13
A Note From Our Pastor
Reverend Sandy Johnson was born and raised in Oregon and was the youngest of four children. She grew up in the Methodist Church and although left it for a time after high school, returned when she and her husband decided to get married. Her Wesleyan roots are strong as she is passionate about her love for God, for humanity and striving for justice for those who have no voice.
She and her husband, John, moved to Las Vegas in 1988 and began their family in 1990. They have three children, Calvin (30), Claire (28) and Camille (16). She served as a lay person for years in the Las Vegas valley serving Trinity UMC, FaithSprings UMF and Green Valley UMC in Henderson.
She first felt a call to ministry in 1999 and after many years of trials and setbacks she was ordained as an Elder in the UMC in June of 2015. She is experienced with church planting, and has a passion for evangelism, preaching, music and sharing God’s love. She describes herself as a servant leader and is relational in her approach to ministry.
She came to ministry after two success careers – the first in mental health as a behavioral therapist working with emotionally and behaviorally disturbed children and youth; the second was in sales, first as a Mary Kay Sales Director and then as an account executive in the trade show industry. Pastor Sandy has a bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University in Sociology and Master of Divinity Degree from Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO.
Rev. Sandy served at Boulder City UMC for 7 years. During her time, they grew and were chartered as a church in February of 2014. She was instrumental in expanding the mission and ministries to the community, guiding the church to become a member of the Reconciling Ministries Network and sparked vitality and growth in the congregation.
She would like to welcome you to our website and invite you to join us for worship, participate in our mission work, or join our church family and experience the fullness of a relationship with Jesus in a vital and growing community of believers.
About Our Church
Santa Cruz Valley's Mission:
A multi-generational church, connecting, sharing and growing in the love of Christ.
Santa Cruz Valley's Vision:
An accepting church inspired and empowered by God to serve the world.
Our United Methodist heritage is rooted in a deep and profound understanding of God's grace. This incredible grace flows from God's great love for us.
Grace can be defined as the love and mercy God gives us because God wants us to have it, not because of anything we have done to earn it. We read in Ephesians 2:8-9 (NRSV), "For by grace you have been saved through faith and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one may boast."
