Angie McCarty

Angie-03What is your purpose on SCV’s Staff?
My purpose on the staff of Santa Cruz Valley UMC is to empower the staff and laity and give them the necessary tools, systems and freedoms to be ministers to a broken world in need of the hope, healing and restoration that Jesus offers.  I am in the office Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 9-3 and Wednesday nights from 6-8 p.m.

Tell us a little bit about yourself…
I received my undergraduate degree at ASU in Social Work. I had planned on working with Child Protective Services, but God had something else in store for me.  Seminary took me to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where I grew in amazing ways!  I graduated in 1999 and began my appointment at appointment at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.  14 years later I was asked to become the Sr. Pastor at Santa Cruz Valley.  My appointment here began in July of 2013.

I have 3 amazing children, Addison, Jackson & Brendan.  They certainly make life a bundle of joy and laughter.  Addison loves playing sports and the piano.  Jackson just started playing flag football and the guitar.  Brendan is the youngest and, given the pace of our lives,  if he’s lucky he’ll get to pick a special activity when he’s 10 years old.  It’s my prediction that when its time he’ll want to take a class to learn how to be a stand up comedian.

What do you do for fun/hobbies?

My home is truly in the mountains surrounding Tucson.  I’m happiest when I’ve run on a trail that takes me far away from people, noise and traffic.  I teach a couple of cycling class at a local gym and I find that keeps me accountable to regular exercise and a group of people who aren’t a part of any church.  It’s exciting to see the world through their eyes, and gives me insight into the people SCV is hoping to reach through God’s love.  I come to life spending unstructured, no-agenda time with my kids.  I also love reading, playing the piano and entertaining.

What is your favorite kind of music?
U2 is the greatest band on the planet…ever…no argument.  Now that you know how I feel, I also love Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, David Crowder Band, Chris Tomlin, classical music and Broadway show tunes.  Sorry, not a huge country fan.

What are your favorite books/authors?
My favorite genre of books is historical fiction.  I especially have enjoyed the works of Ken Follet, The Pillars of the Earth, and World Without End.  I’m looking forward to the third book in his Century Trilogy coming out in 2013.  If I had to choose one book that was most influential to me, however, it would definitely be To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee.

What do you get at Starbucks?
This depends on my mood.  I’m fine with plain old black coffee, but if I’m looking for a special treat I’ll take a non-fat latte.  If I’ve just completed a really long run or bike ride and I’m hoping for a pick-me-up I’ll go for the light caramel Frappuccino.  D’Lish!!
